GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
PERCEPTUAL ASSYMETRIES
Why do you see yourself differently in the mirror compared to on all your photos? Something I never understood, until now. It's because people's brain sees all faces based on the person's right side... and yep, in the mirror it's flopped, your brain considers your left side your right. It's as simple as that.
Did you know that 90% of people's brains register the right side of the person in front of them? They are basically projecting the person's right side onto their full face, with an "assumption" that the other half will mirror that.
What about people whose two sides are really different? one may wonder. For instance, my face.
It is nothing to be concerned about; rather, it's a fascinating explanation that I discovered at the age of 39. Until then, I had only noticed that, when I saw myself as rather pretty in the mirror, the images showed a different version of myself. It's good to know that everyone has always seen the less attractive side of me :D It's a comfort since it indicates I got by in life very well despite that face :) It may also imply that my impression of beauty has nothing to do with my ability to achieve certain goals.
On a serious note, for what it's worth, and I wish I had known about it sooner, I would have spent all these years nurturing my right side, not the better left, perhaps drawing those eyeliners on that side more bravely, and combing my hair to make that side feel the best it could. Instead, I hid that side of my face because I disliked it.
It turns out that it makes no difference which side you prefer, because others will identify your right side with your appearance. No matter what. It's simply what they see. The right side.
So, the next time you comb your hair, put on make-up, or simply stand for the camera, consider your right side and begin to love it even more, regardless of whether it is your better side or not. Because it's her/him in the spotlight. Make them shine!
